What to Do After Arriving in France

These administrative steps are important for daily life and your legal stay in France. We guide you through each one.

Move into your accommodation

Collect your keys, confirm your booking, and register your address — needed for many other administrative steps.

Get a French SIM card

A local SIM card is needed for communication, delivery services, and French administrative accounts.

Validate your visa (VLS-TS)

Students with a VLS-TS visa must complete online visa validation after arriving in France to confirm legal residence status.

Open a French bank account

You need your passport, visa/residence document, proof of address, and university enrollment certificate. Essential for receiving CAF and salary.

Register for healthcare

International students must register for French healthcare coverage (Sécurité Sociale) after arriving. Additional private insurance may also be recommended.

Apply for CAF/APL housing support

The French housing benefit system — eligible students can receive monthly financial support toward rent costs.

Set up your transport pass

Most cities offer student-rate transport passes (Navigo, TaM, etc.). Apply early as proof of address and enrollment is usually required.
